Shoulder Conditions - Calcific Tendinitis of the Shoulder (Degenerative Calcification)

This painful condition occurs when calcium deposits form in tendons of the rotator cuff. These tendons and surrounding tissues in the shoulder become inflamed, which results in moderate to severe shoulder pain, especially when lifting the arm and limited range of movement. There is no specific cause of degenerative calcification; most believe it is caused by normal wear and tear of aging.

Treatment options include anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroid injections, and physical therapy. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to break up and remove the deposits. Newer advances has also allowed the debridement to be performed in office under ultrasound guidance so that the calcium deposit can be aspirated or broken up without the need for surgery.
