Shoulder Conditions - Shoulder Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition characterized by loss of cartilage in the joint, which causes extra wear and tear in the affected joints and results in pain, swelling and stiffness. Causes of degeneration include increased age, repetitive overhead movements, injuries such as fractures or chronic rotator cuff tears, infection, or everyday wear and tear. This damage promotes painful new bone growth along the edges of the joint, which develop slowly over many years.

Treatment options include cortisone injections, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, use of a splint or brace, exercise, and modification of daily activities. Total shoulder replacement is commonly used to replace the joint with a new smooth surface, while resection distal clavicle resection is often advised for symptomatic arthritis of the AC joint. Most shoulder doctors when referring to arthrits however are referring to the ball and socket.
