Shoulder Conditions - Shoulder Dislocations

Shoulder dislocations occur when the head of the upper arm bone, the humerus, slips out of the socket of the shoulder joint. This injury is very common and usually occurs after a fall or from a sports-related injury.

Pain in the shoulder is the most common symptom, but weakness, lack of mobility, bruising, swelling, numbness, or the arm appearing to hang low on the shoulder can occur as well. Closed reduction is usually used to treat this injury. During this procedure, the head of the humerus is placed back into the shoulder socket without surgery. In severe dislocations where damage to the ligaments, tendons or nerves occur, surgery may be required.
